Not sure how to describe it?
You can explain the subject in ordinary words. “A drawing of my dog, not a realistic portrait” is more useful than choosing a style name you are unsure about. If a reference gets only part of it right, say which part. Our style guide helps separate the subject from the way it is drawn.
Tell us it is your first tattoo and what you have not decided. For example: “I know the subject, but need to discuss whether it fits on my wrist.” That gives the artist a specific question to answer.
Make the inquiry specific
Use the inquiry checklist to give the artist something concrete to assess.
For example: “A black-and-grey rose, roughly 4 × 3 inches, on my outer right calf. No existing ink there. I like the shading in this reference, but want a different flower shape. My budget is $300. Can you assess whether that is realistic?” This is an example inquiry, not a price quote.

Plan for the appointment
Wear clothes that let the artist reach the whole area without you holding fabric out of the way. Shorts can make a calf or thigh easier to reach; a loose sleeve can work for an arm. Choose something you do not mind getting ink on. For a chest, sternum, hip, or back piece, discuss clothing and coverage with the artist beforehand.
Confirm whether the visit is a consultation or a tattoo session, and ask how much time to allow for the whole appointment. Tell the artist if you have a firm leaving time. If you want someone with you, ask about guests before bringing them.
Check the stencil before work starts
Check the spelling, dates, size, orientation, and placement on your body. Look in a mirror where needed. If something is wrong or you are undecided, say so before tattooing starts. Do not approve a placement because you feel rushed.
